There are a variety of different press tools to cut, punch, sheer, trim, form and bend materials. They are an invaluable tool for producing components at high volume and presses can be hydraulic, mechanical or pneumatic. Press tools are often custom built to produce a component usually made from sheet metal. Sheet metal items often created by press tools include fenders and roofs for cars, components of aircraft, business and household appliances parts and parts of electronic equipment. Precision parts can be manufacture by press tools too.

Progressive Tools

Progressive tools are used on automatic stamping presses. With this type of tool a manual operation is not possible or useful. Common applications for the tool with progressive machining can be found in the automotive, electronics or household appliance manufacturing industries. The low-cost production of complex products in these industries is partly attributable to the utilization of progressive tools.

Compound Tools

When utilizing the compound tool, the blanking and piercing stages are fused into one by inverting the tool itself. There is no piercing die needed.
The press tool in which Blanking and Piercing operation performed in a single stroke, single station In other word two or more operations may be performed at one station. Such dies are considered as cutting tools since, only cutting operations carried out.

Combination Tools

Combination tools can simultaneously perform two operations. It combines one operation, like forming, with a cutting operation, such as blanking off. Basically, a cutting and non-cutting operation are performed together, but not two cutting operations.

Forming Tools

Sheet metal forming is the process in which the geometry of a sheet metal is altered by application of force. This force is sufficient to plastically deform the material by stressing the metal beyond its yield strength. In this process, material is not removed from the metal.
